
Major General Rtd Charles Tai Gituai
Maj Gen Charles Tai Gituai is a Kenyan professional military officer with a wide and diverse experience of service in the Kenya Defence Forces both locally and internationally. During his service, he has worked in Command, Training, Staff, Intelligence and Diplomacy. Some of the highlights of his career include serving in the Military Intelligence Corp rising to Staff Officer One Intelligence, Commandant of Cadets Training School in Lanet, Nakuru, Colonel in charge of Operations and Training Headquarters Kenya Army. The General also served as the Deputy Chief of Staff, in charge of Operations, Planning and Intelligence (Information), United Nations Mission to Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL), where he was also the Kenyan Contingent Commander. He also served as Colonel General Staff, Eastern Command, and later Deputy Commander Fourth Infantry Brigade.
Maj Gen Tai Gituai has also served as Kenya’s Defence Advisor in India accredited to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Singapore, for close to four years. He also served as the first Force Commander of the Kenya Rapid Deployment Capability (KRDC) responsible for its initial concept development and structuring. He was also a Commander of the Fourth Infantry Brigade, Chief of Operations at the Ministry of Defense Headquarters (DOD) Nairobi, Commandant of Joint Warfare Centre, Lanet Nakuru, an Institution focused on teaching Military Operational Art and Strategy.
He also served as the Joint Chief of Staff, Eastern Africa Standby Force, (EASF) in charge of the military, police, and civilians’ multidimensional components and responsible for development of the regional strategic planning for Peace, Security, Training and Coordination within the framework of the Africa Peace and Security Architecture, (APSA) under auspices of the African Union (AU), for three years. He also served as the General Officer Commanding Western Command. In January 2018, he was competitively selected and appointed Deputy Force Commander, Operations and Plans, African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), until February 2019 when he successfully completed his tour of duty in Somalia. He retired on 20 July 2019 and currently an international consultant on peace, conflict, security, military, and defense matters.
Maj Gen Tai Gituai holds a master’s degree in international studies, University of Nairobi, and master’s degree in Public Administration Annamalai University New Delhi. He is a graduate of Defence Services Command and Staff College, a constituent College of Dhaka National University, Bangladesh and a graduate of the Kenya National Defence College, Karen. He also holds a post graduate diploma in International Law and Diplomacy from the Institute of International Law and Diplomacy, Delhi, India, and a Diploma in Advance Intelligence, Israel Defense Forces and a Diploma in National and International Security, from the Centre for Strategic Studies Galilee International Management Institute, Israel.
Maj Gen Gituai is also a graduate of the Indian Central Institute of Management, where he attained a diploma in Public Administration and also in Human Resource Development. He also has a Certificate of the United Nations Ceasefire Mediation and Management, from Norwegian Defence University, Oslo, Norway, as well as a Certificate in Senior Mission Leadership Course from International Peace Support Training Centre, (IPSTC) Kenya. He also attained a certificate in Consequence Management and legal aspects of Terrorism, from the USA Counter Terrorism Institute, among many other professional qualifications from USA, Asia, Europe, and Kenya.
Maj Gen Charles Tai Gituai was honored by His Excellency the President and Commander in Chief (CIC) who awarded him with the prestigious medals, “The Elder of the Burning Spear” (EBS) and ‘Carrier of the Burning Spear’ (CBS) for his distinguished service to the Nation, among many other service medals. He is married with three children.
